"Let Food Be Thy Medicine and Medicine Be Thy Food"

Every time we eat, we are either feeding disease or fighting it.

 

This has never been more apparently necessary than it is today. The good news is, there are so many foods that boost immunity, it's certain that there are some that will fit your individual tastes, unique health profile and lifestyle. As always, getting your daily intake of vitamins and minerals from your food before needing to supplement is best.

 

Increase your Vitamin C.

Vitamin C is one of our biggest immune builders. Dark leafy greens, cruciferous vegetables, peppers, citrus, and melons are some of the more commonly referenced sources but also are dark cherries, guava, strawberries, kiwis, and my favorite, alma berries. Amla or Amalaki is a rich source of Vitamin C and fiber. It's also known for supporting your heart, reducing inflammation and improving your skin and hair. 

 

Eat Whole Foods. 

Eating as many real, whole foods as you can everyday will crowd out any processed foods you may have been eating. I recommend aiming for 70%+ of your daily intake to be composed of whole foods. Eating real, whole foods will provide your body with the needed vitamins and minerals that help boost your immune system. Are you eating enough fruits and vegetables? Are you eating as many different colors of whole foods as you can? Are you eating enough nuts and seeds?

 

What's the Fuss About Zinc?

There's much talk about zinc on the news lately.  Nuts and seeds are rich in zinc, which is known to increase your white blood cell count, which will increase your immunity. Try adding almonds, walnuts, cashews, and pistachios to your salads, snacks, and vegetables. I love whole, raw walnuts with a touch of organic, raw honey- baklava without the phyllo!! A salad with pepita or sunflower seeds has much more zinc and nutrition than a salad with processed croutons- and has the bonus of much more flavor!
